Why is Apple slowing down iPhones?
Recently reports claimed that Apple is deliberately slowing down its older iPhones and it quite created an uproar in media. Of course, it must have also upset the older iPhone users.
Seeing the negative publicity, Apple has come out with a statement. In its statement given to The Verge and Techcrunch, the Cupertino based company said: "Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices."
The company said that it has pushed out features to manage peak performance on ageing batteries in iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone SE, and the iPhone 7.
The issue first came to light when a Reddit user first complained that his iPhone is getting slowed down. "My iPhone 6S has been very slow these past few weeks, and even after updating multiple times, it was still slow. Couldn't figure out why, but just thought that iOS 11 was still awful to me," the user, who goes by the name TechFire, wrote in a lengthy post.
Later Geekbench founder John Poole did his investigation in the issue. "It appears the problem is widespread, and will only get worse as phones (and their batteries) continue to age," he said in the blog post.
So essentially, Apple is slowing down the devices to prolong their lives. But, by taking its users for a ride.
