HP laptops being recalled due to battery overheating issues

HP has announced a worldwide voluntary safety recall and replacement program for around 52,600 laptop batteries, which “have the potential to overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to customers”. The company is recalling its laptop and workstation computers due to the risk they could burst into flames from overheating. This is the second time in three years when HP has recalled its laptops over some issue.

The recall affects batteries shipped with certain HP Probook, x360, Envy, Pavilion, and HP 11 notebook computers, plus certain HP ZBook mobile workstations. The company says that the issue affects a range of devices sold between December 2015 to December 2017. Here it is worth noting that back in 2017 January, HP had recalled 101,000 laptop batteries over fire concerns.

 

“It is extremely important to check whether your battery is affected,” HP wrote on its recall page. validation “The validation generally takes less than 30 seconds,” it further added. If the validation tool indicates your battery is affected, HP said you should “discontinue use of the battery immediately by placing it in Battery Safety Mode.” When enabled, Battery Safety Mode will discharge the battery and disable charging until the battery is replaced.

HP says that many of these batteries are internal to the system and cannot be replaced by a customer. Therefore the company is providing battery replacement services for free. Additionally, they are providing a BIOS update that places the battery in “Battery Safety Mode” so that the notebook or workstation can be safely used without the battery by connecting to an HP power adaptor. However, please note that the ‘Battery Safety Mode’ is only applicable to HP products affected by this recall.

Some of the affected models are HP Probook 64x (G2 and G3), HP ProBook 65x (G2 and G3), HP x360 310 G2, HP ENVY m6, HP Pavilion x360, and HP 11 notebooks.
